Demystify Commercial Ground Source Heat Pumps and assess the solution’s feasibility for your large-scale residential or commercial project

We need reliable, secure, efficient and clean energy, and commercial ground source heat pumps - deployed at scale or in district heat networks - are a cornerstone of this mission.

They represent the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly form of any heating and cooling system available today.

Yet, the tech is often misunderstood or quickly discounted as a viable renewable energy solution due to a lack of information and/or errors in understanding.

Genius Energy Lab wants to change this.

Read on for why commercial, large-scale and networked GSHPs are vital in the transition away from fossil fuels and access resources to aid your understanding of the technology.

Commercial Ground Source Heat Pumps and The Renewable Revolution

The era of the green economy is here, and commercial ground source heat pumps are not only your ticket to a clean, secure and efficient energy future - they’re the commercially smart decision for your project.

2022 saw record growth in heat pump sales in Europe and, in the US, more than 4 million heat pumps were sold, surpassing gas boilers for the first time.

Yet there are many misconceptions about GSHP technology:

MYTH 1: GSHPs are more expensive than other renewable energy sources.

This is false. While it's true that GSHP systems have a higher upfront cost compared to traditional heating and cooling systems and Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs), with running costs included, ground source heat pumps can offer lifetime cost savings over these systems.

MYTH 2: GSHPs don’t work in cold climates.

Even in the UK, GSHPs are more efficient than gas boilers or ASHPs. For every unit of energy inputted to run the heat pump, around four units are generated. This represents a seasonal coefficient of performance (sCOP) of around 4, or means they are about 400% efficient.

  • A traditional condensing gas boiler is around 85% efficient or has a sCOP around 0.85

  • An Air Source Heat Pump’s (ASHP) sCOP in the UK is about half that of GSHP at 2.0 - 2.2

Free resources on commercial ground source heat pumps

In the face of such misunderstanding, Genius Energy Lab saw the need for clear and actionable advice for consultants and stakeholders to understand Ground Source Heat Pumps more fully and more readily bring this renewable energy tech into their projects.
